Between the “bullet” (pro-gun and law enforcement-related groups), “the beef” (representatives of agribusiness) and “the Bible” (representatives of the Christian segment), the topics up for debate can vary, from the last brazilian law on disarmament (The Disarmament Statute) to the decriminalization of abortion, including the indigenous land rights. What remains the same, however, is the strategy of the bullet, beef and Bible group of using political and legal language, especially notions associated with progressive agendas – such as guaranteeing rights, secularism, separation of powers and will of the people – in anti-pluralistic and fragmented ways that favors its own political agenda. This is how, in the institutional spaces of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary, the words of the Constitution can end up saying the opposite of what they should say. Main characters from the security forces, ruralism or the religious field are converted into bastions of development, victims of a world in disarray, while progressive groups become enemies to be fought, authors of an ideological discourse that is averse to progress.
After The Path to Autocracy, this is the second book in the LAUT collection from Tinta-da-China Brasil, with a foreword by Renáta Uitz, one of the leading academic voices in the fight against authoritarianism in Europe. With this wide-ranging research, Adriane Sanctis de Brito, Luciana Silva Reis, Ana Silva Rosa and Mariana Celano de Souza Amaral help us understand how we can build constitutional resilience in the face of anti-democratic forces.
“The results of this research contribute to essential findings for understanding illiberal and autocratic practices at the heart of constitutional institutions. A necessary book.” – from the preface by Renáta Uitz.
