Democratic Freedoms

The guarantee of freedom to teach, research and learn, in an environment that values pluralism, has constitutional protection in Brazil. Its effectiveness also depends on an institutional structure, guaranteed by university autonomy. LAUT’s research in this area seeks to identify and inform about threats involving budgets and funding cuts, delegitimization of academic work and interference in university autonomy through regulation and centralization.

The rights to seek, receive and disseminate information directly impact the free exercise of political choices and, consequently, the quality of democracy in a country. Therefore, this research area also seeks to promote greater clarity about the various problems concerning freedom of speech in Brazil, and to strengthen the discussion about artistic freedom in the country.
